Kieve welcomes Stephen Stroud as our Leadership School Director from Williamstown, MA, where he has been teaching science since 1999 at Pine Cobble School, an independent day school for students in Pre-K through 9th grade. Stephen is very excited to join us here on the West Neck Road and says, ?The Leadership School is teaching extremely valuable life skills: communication, teamwork, self-knowledge, and good decision-making. People crave safe experiences to help them grow in these ways, though in so many school settings these skills fall prey to tightening schedules and demands for increased test scores. I really appreciate that at The Leadership School we offer something schools can?t ? by literally taking kids out of their comfort zones and teaching them to look at themselves in a new way, we are helping them in school and in every aspect of their lives.?

While at the Pine Cobble School he founded and annually orchestrated the Kids? Inquiry Conference, bringing together hundreds of student scientists and their teachers from many schools to share their work. In Williamstown, he created and operated the Berkshire Science School, providing wilderness exploration, natural history, and ecology classes for children ages 3-15. He founded and directed the Community Wetlands Group, a citizen-science organization dedicated to identifying and monitoring breeding grounds of local amphibians. He has a Master of Science degree in Environmental Education from the Audubon Expedition Institute/Lesley University, and has extensive experience leading wilderness trips and teaching wilderness survival skills.

?My most powerful experiences as a teacher have been those in which I?ve challenged students with explicit and attainable goals that felt meaningful and important to them and to me. It?s at those times I?ve witnessed students stand a little taller, shake my hand a little stronger, and look me in the eye a little steadier, and I?ve felt like I was doing what I was meant to. At The Leadership School, our entire focus is to reach those moments of transformation for the students and the teachers alike. It's a perfect fit to have found The Leadership School at Kieve.?

Kieve-Wavus Education, Inc. is one of the Mid Coast?s largest non-profit educational organizations, with a year-round staff of 35 and part-time of 140 during the summer. Known throughout the State of Maine because of The Leadership School that works with thousands of middle-school students, their teachers and parents, Kieve-Wavus also operates two successful summer camps on Damariscotta Lake, Kieve for boys and Wavus for girls. Campers hail from all over the United States and several other countries. Kieve-Wavus also runs a co-ed wilderness program in Colorado, an Alumni & Family Camp on the Wavus campus, and, since 2002, a camp for families from New York and Washington, D.C. who were affected by the 9/11 tragedy.

"We feel fortunate to have found Stephen to lead the Leadership School into a strong future and to continue as a trusted educational partner throughout the State of Maine", says Executive Director Henry Kennedy. As the Director of The Leadership School, Stephen brings passion and experience in developing and facilitating transformative educational experiences, organizational skills, and leadership. He will arrive in early summer with his wife Phoebe and a collection of stringed instruments he loves to play.
