Volunteer Spotlight - Alan Baldwin
August 26, 2006
Alan Baldwin became a counselor at Kieve in 1966, remained on the staff until 1972, and in a very real way has never left. In the "real" world Alan owns and operates Artsake Framing, a successful picture framing shop in Damariscotta, and he and his wife Mollie (the camp nurse in 1970 and 1971) live just down the road in Damariscotta Mills.
But to many Kieve campers Alan is best known as "the pottery guy". During the evenings throughout the year and on many weekends Alan can be found in the pottery shop creating his own work but also volunteering countless hours to campers who marvel at his skill and wish to emulate him. Alan is a gifted teacher, and campers come away with a greatly enhanced knowledge of their own capabilities along with an appreciation of what makes a truly memorable piece of pottery.
For the past five years Alan has also volunteered his time and talent to our 9/11 Family Camp. Here, too, his patience as well as his skill serves both our younger guests as well as some of their parents. This summer Alan built a beautiful display shelf on the Pasquaney porch to feature camper work as well as some of his own. Guests frequently remark on how beautiful many of the pieces are.
Alan also helps Kieve-Wavus by creating many of the camp signs and framing the many pictures that adorn the walls of our buildings. But it's in the pottery studio that he really shines. Kieve-Wavus is fortunate to have him as a friend and we thank Alan for his commitment and generosity.
