| The KLC Goes Wireless
May 11, 2005
When the Kennedy Learning Center was first envisioned more than a decade ago, it was seen as a place where adult groups - educational, corporate, and not-for-profits - could "get away from it all" by separating themselves from everyday responsibilities and interruptions to concentrate on issues of more global importance. And over the years many groups have found the Learning Center to provide exactly this atmosphere.
But it is perhaps a sign of the times that many of our guests can no longer afford the luxury of such isolation. First came the cell phone, that ubiquitous umbilical cord that ties us to friends and foes alike. Cell phone reception inside the Learning Center is inconsistent at best, and guests standing in the parking lot beyond the top of the stairs, cell phones glued to their ears, became a familiar sight.
But in recent years guests have increasingly pleaded for open access to the Internet, both for email and to utilize the web. So, this winter Kieve completed the process of providing the Learning Center with a DSL connection and with wireless connectivity throughout the building. The degree to which a particular group takes advantage of this new technology is up to them, but it's available should it be needed.
The Kennedy Learning Center continues to serve a broad range of constituencies well. If you feel that it might be an appropriate location for a group with whom you are associated, please get in touch with Diane Impallomeni (email to klc@kieve.org or by telephone at (207) 563-2188) to discuss your specific needs. Weekends especially fill up quickly throughout the year, so please call early.
