Character Education Through Active Learning!

Since 1981, the award-winning Leadership School at Kieve has been developing leaders and strengthening communities by challenging students, teachers, and parents to think in a new way when it comes to the growth and development of the citizens of Maine.

From Susan Gendron, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Education: Can one non-profit affect the culture of education in Maine? "I believe The Leadership School at Kieve is doing just that. Thanks to the nearly three decades of passion, expertise, and a generous annual commitment of $750,000 by Kieve-Wavus Education, Inc., over a quarter of Maine’s public school graduates have built relationships, experienced challenges, and developed the confidence to be responsible leaders. The curriculum is ahead of the curve, responsive to the needs of 21st century students and public institutions of Maine, drawing meaningful connections between research and the real world of educating the whole child, and outfitting students for the myriad transitions ahead. The Leadership School is an essential resource for teachers, administrators, and students alike, leading by example along the path toward rigor and relevance in our schools. The Leadership School’s commitment to Maine makes an enormous difference, and we depend on it." – November 3, 2008

The Leadership School at Kieve’s program is grounded in three principles:
1. Social connections and skills are critical to the success of students.
2. Active learning techniques engage students of all abilities and backgrounds. Active techniques that are fun and encourage metaphorical thinking facilitate maximum growth because it meets students where they are.
3. Solvable challenges of increasing difficulty enable students to accomplish more than they ever thought possible.

The Leadership School’s Core Program includes:

  • A five-day residential experience
  • An entire middle school grade, plus their teachers
  • Partner Teacher workshop, including classroom materials (earning Professional Development contact hours)
  • Parent Workshop: “Learning Together”
  • Partner Teacher follow-up workshop at school
  • Visitor’s Night for family and friends of students
Now annually serving approximately 7,000 students across Maine and hundreds from other states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, The Leadership School at Kieve combines rigorous and relevant group work, individual reflection, and a host of fun, interactive and adventure-based initiatives to address many of the issues youth face daily, both in and out of the school setting, like:
  • bullying
  • sexual harassment
  • conflict resolution
  • stereotypes
  • drug and alcohol abuse

At The Leadership School at Kieve, students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to take positive risks, set meaningful goals, make healthy decisions, all while being supportive team members and strong leaders.
