Leadership School Educator

Maura Allen
Bowdoin 2014
BA in Government and Legal Studies
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Born and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Maura graduated from Bowdoin College in 2014. There, she played ice hockey and rugby and practiced her hobby of juggling. She\'s looking forward to spending more time in Maine at The Leadership School.

Hanne Bailey

Hanne is from Jordan Elbridge, NY. She enjoys to travel, run, bike, ski, listen to music, and be on the water. Hanne is interested in sustainable innovations and biomimicry. She is very excited to start working at Kieve Wavus and to explore coastal Maine

Dave Berndston
BS in Biology and Psychology
Started at Kieve: August 2014

Dave was born and bred in Chicago and couldn\\\'t be happier to find himself here in Maine. He was a tennis instructor for six years and spends most of his time listening to and playing music, longboarding, and enjoying the beauty of the natural world around us. He is incredibly excited to be a part of the Kieve family and cannot wait to spend his time here learning from other staff as well as kids.


Sam Copland
Bowdoin 2014

Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Sam is from Uxbridge, Massachusetts. An education minor at Bowdoin College, she is very excited to combine her passion of working with students with her love of being outdoors. Sam worked with students in various capacities during college, including tutoring at local schools in Brunswick and being a counselor at Slovenski Camps during the summers. In her free time, Sam can be found running, cooking, or hanging out with friends.

Sarah Cowan
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Sarah hails from central Indiana. She lives for adventure and all things camp. She just completed her 6th summer working at Happy Hollow Children\'s camp and is stoked for this fall at the Leadership School.

Drew Duckworth
Drew is from New York and was a camper at Kieve for three years while growing up. For the past few years he has been exploring the wild places of southern Colorado, western Washington, and South America. With his passions for the outdoors and educating youth, he is jazzed to return to Kieve and teach at The Leadership School.

Kidder Erdman

BS in Music Industry
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Kidder is from Philadelphia, PA and has spent seven summers at Kieve, including one as a counselor. He brings a love of Kieve and its history to the staff, and hopes to inspire kids to be their best selves, as his counselors have done for him for over half of his life. In his free time, Kidder loves to sail, backpack, and longboard. He is incredibly excited with the opportunity to work at TLS for the fall.

Guillaume Gutkin-Nicolas
Started at the Leadership School: March 2013

Gui was born in Montreal and moved to Boston when he was six. He volunteered as a teacher's assistant at a day camp called Lexplorations for three summers. He loves playing sports such as soccer, snowboarding, running, and swimming. He has recently discovered a passion for endurance and obstacle races and participated in his second one this summer.

Will Hackett
Muhlenberg College - 2010
Started at The Leadership School: August 2011

Will is a native of Belle Meade, NJ and spent six years as a camper at Kieve. During his five years as a counselor for Kieve Boys Camp, Will worked with children ranging from 8 - 16 years and led several extended trips into the Maine Wilderness. He is a 2010 graduate of Muhlenberg College. Will loves watching and playing sports, especially football and getting out into the Maine Woods.

Jessica Kowalski

BA in Adventure Recreation and Tourism and Adventure Based Environmental Education
Started at The Leadership School: 2014

Jessica was born in West Virginia but spent most of her life traveling in a military family. After spending every summer in Maine, it became a second home. She went to Washington County Community College and Unity College where she received degrees in Adventure Recreation and Tourism and Adventure Based Environmental Education. Jessica has taught rock climbing, kayaking, and canoeing. She loves teaching and looks forward to sharing her passions with others. In her spare time, Jessica loves to go backpacking, rock climbing, and play ukulele.

Hannah Lovejoy

Hannah is from northwestern Connecticut. Hannah works at Wavus during the summer, where, much like The Leadership School, she can combine her passions of working with students with the outdoors. Hannah\'s interests include traveling, running and spending time outside.

Matthew Markot

Matt is a native of Middletown, CT and loves to travel, backpack, and ride his bike. A camper and counselor at Winona Camps in Bridgton, ME for eight years, he is no stranger to how special a place like Kieve-Wavus is. He is super excited to join TLS and can't wait to learn from his co-educators and students alike!

Jack Marston
Skidmore College 2014

Started at The Leadership School: 2014

Hailing from Boston, Jack has been with Kieve for 15 years: ten as a camper and five as a counselor. Jack loves getting outdoors, swimming on a warm day, biking on quiet country roads, taking adventures to places he has never been, and good conversation. He\'s tremendously excited to be part of The Leadership School crew, and there\'s no place he\'d rather be than home sweet home, Kieve!

Paul McCarthy

Started at The Leadership School: May 2010

A graduate in 2007 from the University of New Hampshire with a B.S. in Nutritional Science, Paul has personal trainer certification through the ISSA that he completed during his senior year of college. After graduating he moved to Montana for a year and managed a gym in Bozeman, MT. Paul enjoys playing sports, traveling, and hiking.

Maggie McKeon

Maggie is a Maine native who likes the outdoors, bluegrass music, and traveling. She just graduated from Colorado College, where she fell in love with outdoor education. She has worked as a raft guide at Adventure Bound for the the past four summers. Maggie is excited to begin her first season at the Leadership School!

Cameron Miller

Cameron came to the Leadership School from Orem, UT. He brings enthusiasm, creativity and compassion to the Leadership School team. In his free time, Cam loves sports, hanging out with friends and exploring Maine.

Mary Montgomery

Mary is from Atlanta GA. She worked for Moondance Adventures the past three summers in Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Wyoming. Mary's interests include anything outdoors, reading, and photography.

Zoe Nahatis

Started at The Leadership School: August 2013

During college Zoe volunteered with Peer Health Exchange teaching ninth grade health classes, participated in service trips to Alaska and Guatemala with Global Outreach, and spent summers working with developmentally disabled adults. Zoe's interests include travel, dance, yoga, and the outdoors.

Tyler Pace
Connecticut College, 2007: History and Italian
Boston University: MA in History
Teacher with The Leadership School since 2010

After Tyler graduated from Connecticut College in 2007, he spent a year working as a Student Services Assistant at the Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy. He then spent some time back home in Kentucky before heading to graduate school in Boston. Tyler will bring his vast experience and deeply grounded Kieve history as camper, counselor and educator to the Bridge Year faculty. In his spare time, Tyler loves to play Ultimate Frisbee, make friends with dogs, read Dante and Wendell Berry and listen to all kinds of Bluegrass music.

Erik Phelan
William Paterson University

Started at The Leadership School: August 2011

Erik came to the woods of Maine from New York. Disaster relief work in Haiti in 2011 ignited an interest in working with children. At the Leadership School, Erik connects with students through joy, exploration and creative expression. When not working with students, Erik likes to run(miles and miles. . .) , dance and listen to music.

Christine Roback

Christine is a recent graduate from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. During her four years there she was involved in a variety of activities that sparked her interest in experiential education and leadership. Christine was involved in the college pre-orientation program, a leader for the Alternative Spring Break program, and was a founding member of the marathon canoe racing team. When that water freezes and she can't canoe, Christine enjoys both alpine and telemark skiing. A native of Utica, NY, Christine is excited to spend the next season in Maine!

Nick Sanchez
National Outdoor Leadership School
Started at The Leadership School: August 2012

Nick is from Dumbarton, NH and has spent eight summers at Kieve, including two as a counselor. Nick is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School and has spent time backpacking in Colorado and the South West US. He is excited to take on the new challenge of the Leadership School and is looking forward to working with youth full time.

Ruth Solow

At Grinnell Ruth worked for the community arts council, played at preschool, and was involved in student wellness initiatives on campus. Though she grew up in New York City, Ruth was introduced to the wilderness at Wavus, where she spent three years as a camper and one as a counselor. After four years of living in the cornfields, Ruth is excited to return to Maine.

Brian Sperry

Brian is from WestPoint, UT. He grew up with a love and respect for the outdoors and has always loved hiking and backpacking. Brian has a passion for learning and teaching, loves reading, and is ecstatic about becoming a part of the teaching team at The Leadership School.

Ben Swanson

Ben was a camper at Kieve for 10 years and has been a counselor for four years. While at Gettysburg College he worked for the Gettysburg Recreation and Activities Board leading outing trips and Experiential Education exercises. He can\'t wait to start at The Leadership School at Kieve - his second home

Kelsea Trefethen

Kelsea has lived in Maine her whole life but has always had a passion for travel. Most recently she spent a week volunteering in Guatemala. Kelsea loves all things outdoors, especially hiking! She definitely identifies as a dog person but loves all animals. Kelsea is dedicated to being a positive role model in the lives of young people.

Anna Weissman

Anna is from New York City but spent the last four years studying Anthropology at Grinnell College in Iowa. She has a lot of experience working with youth in many different capacities, from juvenille homes to summer camps. Anna loves dancing and swimming and is very excited to be living in Maine!

Leah was born in Pittsburgh, PA. In the past she has worked as both a camp counselor and youth group advisor. Her favorite outdoor hobbies include hiking and camping. Other hobbies include music, reading, and writing. Leah is very excited to be working at The Leadership School.
