Leadership School Educator

Hanne Bailey
St. Lawrence University, 2013
BA in Chemistry
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Hanne is from Jordan Elbridge, NY. She enjoys to travel, run, bike, ski, listen to music, and be on the water. Hanne is interested in sustainable innovations and biomimicry. She is very excited to start working at Kieve Wavus and to explore coastal Maine

Dave Berndtson
University of Wisconsin-Madison 2012
BS in Biology and Psychology
Started at Kieve: August 2014

Dave was born and bred in Chicago and could not be happier to find himself here in Maine. He was a tennis instructor for six years and spends most of his time listening to and playing music, longboarding, and enjoying the beauty of the natural world around us. He is incredibly excited to be a part of the Kieve family and cannot wait to spend his time here learning from other staff as well as kids.


Sam Copland
Bowdoin 2014
BA in Psychology and Gender & Womens Studies
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Sam is from Uxbridge, Massachusetts. An education minor at Bowdoin College, she is very excited to combine her passion of working with students with her love of being outdoors. Sam worked with students in various capacities during college, including tutoring at local schools in Brunswick and being a counselor at Slovenski Camps during the summers. In her free time, Sam can be found running, cooking, or hanging out with friends.

Sarah Cowan
Started at The Leadership School: August 2014

Sarah hails from central Indiana. She lives for adventure and all things camp. She just completed her 6th summer working at Happy Hollow Childrens camp and is stoked for this fall at the Leadership School.

Skyler Dunfey
Wheaton College, MA - 2015

Skyler is a native Mainer who loves the outdoors, creating art, and singing and playing guitar with friends. She has worked as a Wavus counselor for two summers and even attended The Leadership School in 2006 as a student. With minors in education and psychology, Skyler has a passion for experiential learning and is excited to be a part of the TLS community as an educator.

Will Hackett
Muhlenberg College - 2010
Started at The Leadership School: August 2011

Will is a native of Belle Meade, NJ and spent six years as a camper at Kieve. During his five years as a counselor for Kieve Boys Camp, Will worked with children ranging from 8 - 16 years and led several extended trips into the Maine Wilderness. He is a 2010 graduate of Muhlenberg College. Will loves watching and playing sports, especially football and getting out into the Maine Woods.

Nick Harnish
University of Wisconsin Platteville 2015
Bachelor of Science: Major-Criminal Justice w/ and emphasis in Law Enforcement, Minor-Social and Environmental Justice.
Bachelor of Art: Major Political Science w/ an emphasis in International Relations, Minor-Geography.
Started at Kieve: August 2015

Nick is a bit of a Nomadic soul, was born in Tucson AZ and raised throughout the Midwest. At the ripe age of 17, Nick began a journey with the United States Army. After his service Nick decided to become a Scholar and a Gentlemen. He enrolled at UW-Platteville where he obtained an expansive knowledge base that he is excited to bring to Kieve and share with everyone. While attending college, Nick worked as a Resident Assistant and Outdoor Guide and is stoked to take his experience and apply them at TLS. In his spare time Nick I the Adviser for his Undergrad Brotherhood (Fraternity) as well as the Conservation Chair for the Chippewa Valley Council. Growing up in the Boy Scouts of America, has given Nick a passion to work worth youth in the outdoors. Yes, he is an Eagle Scout and very proud of that fact. Im ready for my next ADVENTURE, which will be working in Maine as an Outdoor Educator. #LetTheAdventureFindYou

Matthew Markot
Trinity College, 2012
BA in Political Science
Started at The Leadership School: August 2013

Matt was born and raised in central Connecticut but likes to pretend he is a Mainer. As such, he owns a snowmobile older than him which may run this winter, he likes to ski but not on weekends, and is generally happy when going fast. After spending the last two summers living on an island, he also thinks he\'s a pirate, ask him about that. Here\'s to a great year at TLS!

Maggie McKeon
Colorado College, 2014
BA in Anthropology and Latin American Studies

Maggie is a Maine native who likes the outdoors, bluegrass music, and traveling. She graduated from Colorado College, where she fell in love with outdoor education. She fills her year with raft guiding, ski patrolling, and having fun at The Leadership School!


Mary Montgomery

Mary is from Atlanta GA. She worked for Moondance Adventures the past three summers in Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Wyoming. Mary's interests include anything outdoors, reading, and photography.

Tyler Pace
Connecticut College, 2007: History and Italian
Boston University: MA in History
Teacher with The Leadership School since 2010

After Tyler graduated from Connecticut College in 2007, he spent a year working as a Student Services Assistant at the Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy. He then spent some time back home in Kentucky before heading to graduate school in Boston. Tyler will bring his vast experience and deeply grounded Kieve history as camper, counselor and educator to the Bridge Year faculty. In his spare time, Tyler loves to play Ultimate Frisbee, make friends with dogs, read Dante and Wendell Berry and listen to all kinds of Bluegrass music.

Jessica Richter

Seattle University, 2014: History and French
McGill University: MA in History

Jessica was born in Montreal, but grew up in Colorado. It was in the Rockies that she fell in love with hiking, camping, skiing and snowboarding. At Seattle U, she led school leadership retreats and excursions in the Cascades, then worked as a TA at McGill. She also enjoys reading, singing, and spontaneous traveling.

Nick Sanchez
National Outdoor Leadership School
Started at The Leadership School: August 2012

Nick is from Dumbarton, NH and has spent eight summers at Kieve, including two as a counselor. Nick is a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School and has spent time backpacking in Colorado and the South West US. He is excited to take on the new challenge of the Leadership School and is looking forward to working with youth full time.

Brian Sperry

Brian is from WestPoint, UT. He grew up with a love and respect for the outdoors and has always loved hiking and backpacking. Brian has a passion for learning and teaching, loves reading, and is ecstatic about becoming a part of the teaching team at The Leadership School.

Ben Swanson

Ben was a camper at Kieve for 10 years and has been a counselor for five years. While at Gettysburg College he worked for the Gettysburg Recreation and Activities Board leading outing trips and Experiential Education exercises. He loves working at The Leadership School at Kieve - his second home.

B.S. in Natural Resources

Chris was born and raised down south in Little Rock, AR, and is looking forward to exploring a new region with great people. He loves spending time outside climbing and fishing, and is always with a hefty supply of good reads. Chris is super stoked to begin learning from educators and students alike. He loves to give a robust \\\"Wooo pig sooie\\\" every once in a Saturday during football season.
