Meet our Teachers

Challenge Course Specialist

Douglas Wilson
Unity College of Maine
BS in Adventure Education and Adventure Therapy
Started at The Leadership School: January 2008

Doug graduated from Unity College in Maine in 2007 with a B.S. in Adventure Education and Adventure Therapy. Prior to working for Kieve he completed an Adventure Educator's Semester with Outward Bound and became a field instructor for the Wilderness program in Maine and the Discovery program in South Carolina during the summer. Doug has hiked Mt. Katahdin and Mt. Washington and canoed on the Rangeley Lakes extensively. In his time off Doug can be found rock climbing, canoeing, and backpacking.

Jason Drake
Green Mountain College

Started at The Leadership School: February 2005

After graduating from Green Mountain College in Vermont in 2003, Jason heard that The Leadership School was hiring and jumped at the chance to sign on. Having been a student at The Leadership School himself as a 7th grader at Nobleboro Central School, he was excited to be able to create the same great experience he had for other kids in Maine. Since beginning as a teacher in 2005 Jason has worked as the waterfront director for Camp Kieve during the summer, and has recently transitioned into the role of Professional Development Specialist where he can have a deeper impact on the curriculum of The Leadership School. When not working Jason likes to play golf, Frisbee golf, and spend time working on his house with his wife, Alice.

Ellen Berry
George Williams College of Aurora University
MS in Recreation Administration
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

A native of Chicago, IL, Ellen is excited to leave the city and call Maine home, just as her Grandmother did many years ago. She recently completed her MS in Recreation Administration and a 50-day Outdoor Leader Course with the North Carolina Outward Bound School. She has worked with children in a variety of environments as a camp counselor, after-school program supervisor, special education teacher and most recently as an adventure education instructor. Ellen is an outdoor enthusiast who also enjoys cooking, reading, writing letters and has recently discovered a love for adventure and fitness races. Ellen is thrilled to join the Kieve community and hopes to use this opportunity to inspire young people while continuing to grow professionally and personally.

Jonathan Carey
Georgia Southern University

Started at The Leadership School: Fall 2008

Anxious to remove himself from the “southern box” that he grew up in, Jonathan was excited to get a response from his interest in working for The Leadership School. Having lived in the south all of his life, Jonathan wants to see what life is like in the North. A graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Health and Kinesiology, Jonathan brings a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to The Leadership School staff. To Jonathan, every day is an adventure and he is excited to meet all of the incoming students and teachers

Owen Cassidy
University Maine at Farmington 2009
BA in Business and Economics with a Ski Industries Program Certificate: Teaching and Coaching.
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Owen is an outdoor enthusiast, born and raised in the great state of Maine. While attending University of Maine at Farmington for a Business Economics degree, he took a semester off to attend the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming. During his stay with NOLS, Owen honed his leadership skills and developed his ability to pass these skills onto others. After graduating from NOLS, he became a Maine Whitewater Guide and continued to pass on his wilderness knowledge to young campers in the northern Maine woods. In the winters, he applied these skills to teaching and coaching snowboarding in Rangeley, Maine. When outside and on leisure time, Owen loves to find himself paddling whitewater, telemark skiing, snowboarding or just enjoying what the state of Maine has to offer.

Aimee Gunn
University of Florida 2008
BS in Natural Resources Conservation with a specialization in Environmental Education.
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Aimee has been working for AmeriCorps NCCC, a national service organization that completes different service projects for nonprofits, community based organizations, schools and cities around the country. Over her 10 month commitment with AmeriCorps she has found herself in the states of Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee and Louisiana doing a variety of different jobs. She calls the beaches of Florida home but finds herself coming back summer after summer to the lakes of Maine. Aimee's passion is being outdoors and looking for any kind of adventure. She can’t wait to enjoy the Maine wilderness and surrounding community while working at The Leadership School.

Elise Lindsey

Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Elise comes to The Leadership School after two summers as a counselor at the Wavus Camp for Girls. Her hobbies and interests include, but are not limited to: backpacking, tennis, adventures, running, cooking, dress-up, thinking, shopping, family, friends, attempting new instruments, crafts, experiments, sewing, and exploring. In her leisure time she love spending time with friends, family, nature, and making the most out of life! Elise is excited to be working with the students this year.

Sigrid Stanley
University of Vermont
BA in Englsh/Philosohy
Started at The Leadership School: August 1999

Sigrid graduated from UVM in 1998 with a B.A in English. Previously on staff at the Leadership School from 1999-2001, first as an Intern then as a Teacher, Sigrid rejoined us as a Teacher in Fall 2007. During her time away, Sigrid took time to travel and guide in Alaska, gaining extensive back-country experience in the US and Canada. She loves to play outside - dirt biking, kayaking, hiking, etc and is very happy to be back at the Leadership School.

Jill Tarkleson

BA Rehabilitation Services
Started at The Leadership School: August 2008

After graduating from University of Maine at Farmington in 2006 with a degree in Rehabilitation Services, Jill headed to Colorado to enjoy hiking in the "incredibly huge mountains." It was while she was there that she discovered her love for working with kids through her employment with a wilderness adventure program. Recently however, Jill decided that it was time to come back to the east coast, closer to family and the ocean. She is excited to be at The Leadership School at looking forward to whatever adventure that may bring. When she is not working she loves to paint, build picture frames, mountain bike, snowboard, and BAKE PIES!!!

Leigh Williamson
Hobart and William Smith College
BA in French/Childhood Special Education
Started at The Leadership School: August 2008

Leigh is a recent graduate from William Smith College, located in the Finger Lakes region of western New York. There, she studied both French and Childhood Education/Special Education. She pursued her love for the French language by studying abroad in France where French and Francophone Studies became her major, but it was through the Education Program that she discovered her passion for teaching. After graduating with a B.A. in French and dual certification in Childhood Education and Special Education, she saw the Leadership School as the perfect way to put her teaching skills to use and to share her passion with the rest of the Leadership School staff.
Leigh has a very diverse background, having lived in four different states throughout her childhood. She grew up mainly in New York and so considers it her home state. Now, she is excited to call such a beautiful state as Maine home!

Maria Millard - Management Trainee

MA Education Policy, Organization and Leadership Studies
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Maria grew up in Orono, Maine and is proud to be a Mainer. She is a graduate of Amherst College and The Stanford University School of Education’s Policy, Organization and Leadership Studies Master’s program. Maria has most recently been working in South Africa on issues of access to education and on student learning outcomes. She is thrilled to be back in Maine, working for the Leadership School, and enjoying all the great outdoor activities the Pine Tree State has to offer.

Tyler Blatt
Georgia Southern University
BA in Outdoor Recreation
Started at the Leadership School: August 2009

A former Kieve camper and counselor, Tyler is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation. Since graduation, he has been in Florida, working with children and young adults as a substitute teacher. This past summer, Tyler has made a road trip out of getting from Florida to Maine and had the chance to see the whole east coast. When not working, Tyler enjoys biking and playing guitar. Tyler is excited to be coming back to Maine and to The Leadership School.

Oliver Crane
Brigham Young University-Idaho 2009
BA in English-Literature
Started with the Leadership School: Aug 2009

Oliver is a recent graduate in English Literature with clusters in History and Economics. He grew up in Maryland and loves the water. Oliver gained backpacking, whitewater, and rock climbing experience growing up around the Potomac River in Maryland. He furthered his outdoor education by guiding troubled youth in the Arizona desert in the Anasazi program, caretaking a winter ranch in the Teton Valley, working ropes courses, and volunteering at a youth ranch for the last four years teaching blacksmithing, pottery, woodworking, horseback riding, and backpacking. Oliver has experience working with the elderly, children with special needs, and youth from middle school to high school. Oliver loves Brazilian jujitsu, reading, work, being with people, and is excited to be here.

Chris Dorman
Keene State College

Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Chris is originally from Dexter, ME and graduated with a B.S. from Keene State College in Computer Science and Education. She has lived in New Hampshire for the last eight years and missed being in Maine. Chris loves being outdoors; doing anything from yard work, to rock climbing, to just hanging out staring at the lake. She can't wait to be a part of the Leadership School family and back in the great state of Maine!

Abby Green
University of Maine
BA in Geography
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Abby is a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington where she received a Bachelors Degree in Geography. She grew up in Southern Maine. When home, she can most often be found somewhere near the ocean. Abby also enjoys hiking, biking, painting, sailing, and skiing! She is looking forward to this fall and all of the adventures yet to come.

Forrest Mehlhorn

Started at The Leadership School August 2009

Forrest is a native of Nobleboro, Kieve camper, veteran counselor since 2005, and trip leader for Kieve West, our counselor in training program, in Colorado during 2008. Since graduation he has been an Assistant Director for Tripping for our Kieve Summer Camp for Boys. Forrest brings a wealth of experience working with young people and we are pleased to have him join the Leadership School team.

Kelly Orr
Bowdoin College 2006
BA Art History and Spanish
Started at The Leadership School August 2009

Kelly is a graduate of Bowdoin College, class of 2006 where she spent her time studying Art History and Spanish, playing rugby and exploring the outdoors in the great state of Maine. She love farmer’s markets, yoga, skiing, and reading. Kelly joined the Kieve-Wavus team in June 2009 as a Wavus Counselor. Prior to that she spent three months living and working in Kenya and cannot wait to tell you all about it.

Pamela Porter
Brigham Young University Idaho
B.A. History Education/Art Education
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Pamela graduated for BYU-Idaho with a double major in History and Art Education. She has always had a great love for outdoor recreation and has recently discovered the power of adventure education. She brings a broad range of experience including teaching in public schools in Idaho and Las Vegas, having been a staff for Outdoor Youth Adventures in Idaho, and having recently completed a summer with The Kostopulos Dream Foundation, a camp for people with disabilities, in Salt Lake City. Her hobbies include: watercolor painting, ceramics, a variety of sports, climbing, nearly any outdoor recreational sport, and visiting historical sites and art museums when ever possible. Pamela is excited to add the adventure element to the education needs of the students in Maine.

Anthony Roberts
Johnson & Wales University

Joined the Leadership School Aug. 2009

Anthony is a native of Daytona Beach, FL. who attends Johnson & Wales University, North Miami Campus. There, he will soon obtain his B.S. in Marketing and presently has an A.S. in Marketing. He enjoys swimming, teaching and helping others. Anthony has held and currently holds numerous leadership roles; on and off campus. He's excited about being a teaching intern and looks forward to meeting you.

Kevin Sylvester
University of Connecticut
BS in Business Administration
Started at The Leadership School: August 2009

Kevin has spent eight summers working at summer camps in a different capacities, and thoroughly enjoys working with children. He spent this past summer working out of Ely, Minnesota with a partnership program of the U.S. Forest Service doing conservation work in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Kevin enjoys skiing, backpacking, cooking and playing guitar and is super excited to be in Maine working at the Leadership School.

Nicky Wyman

Nicky Wyman has spent the past four years studying at the University of Maine at Farmington. She has recently graduated in May 2009. At Farmington she received an education in Psychology from a encouraging and dependable staff which has motivated her to always think outside the box. She has a passion for photography, film, reading, outdoors, and she’s always ready for an adventure.
