September 2010:
Master’s of Education Program
We are pleased to announce that Antioch University New England (ANE) graduate classes for teachers will be held at Kieve-Wavus starting Spring 2010 and a comprehensive Master of Education degree program will begin in September. “This partnership with ANE is a great opportunity for teachers to build on their Kieve experience and learn more experiential classroom strategies that foster classroom community and motivate students. It’s an exciting next step in the programs Kieve offers for educators,” says Leadership School Programs Coordinator, Sarah Ricker.
ANE has been a pioneer of standards-based, experiential education in coastal Maine for many years. Antioch’s Critical Skills Institutes, Co-Seed Place-based Education school sites, and Experienced Educators M.Ed. cohorts have worked with schools and teachers from Saco to Searsport and Vinalhaven. ANE alumna, Jan Staples, Principal of Camden-Rockport Elementary School, says, “Antioch classes are just the thing for working teachers, practical, hands-on and cutting edge. ANE really walks its talk!” As one of the consulting organizations on the creation of the Maine Learning Results, Antioch has been instrumental in helping Maine teachers integrate the Guiding Principles into their classrooms.
“The similarity in values and mission between Kieve and ANE is striking,” notes Dr. Tom Julius, director of the ANE Experienced Educators Master’s of Education program. “Both organizations empower young people and adults through their focus on 21st Century skills, experiential learning, leadership, and community engagement. It’s a natural fit for both ANE and Kieve.”
Courses are designed for teachers of any grade level or subject area, and typically include other, non-traditional educators, such as artists, environmental educators, vocational/technical educators and community college instructors. The first two courses, Building Learning Communities and Real-World Learning, form the basis for creating exciting, productive, experiential classrooms and for integrating the Maine Learning Results Guiding Principals through standards-based learning. Participants may then apply those courses to the Antioch New England M.Ed. program that will start in Fall 2010, also at Kieve.
Courses are held on weekends, and are scheduled and designed to meet the demands of full-time working teachers. “It’s a great opportunity for teachers to further their connection to Kieve and energize their classrooms,” says Sarah Ricker, “I urge teachers to take advantage of this unique opportunity that Kieve and Antioch are offering.”
